What is Aikido?

How is Aikido different from other martial arts?

Aikido is different from other martial arts in purpose. In all martial arts the defining purpose of the art is to limit or destroy the ability of the other conflict participants to damage or control the martial artist. In almost all martial arts, damaging or controlling the other participants is how the purpose is met. Thus, the operating principle of most martial arts is that the participant who outperforms the other(s) wins the fight, and most likely through damaging or controlling the adversary(ies).

In contrast, Aikido operates on the principle that the participants are "in it together" for an outcome that beneficially resolves the conflict for all participants. Thus, its purpose is to create an avenue of expression of attack energy so that it may be fully expended in a safe way, so that the desire to attack is eradicated, not the attacker or the attacker's target.
